Zagreb Library Association
Zagreb Library Association (ZLA) is a regional professional association that gathers library professionals from City of Zagreb and Zagreb County area. Purpose, goals and activities of the Association are to contribute to professional education, to monitor, examine and address any professional issues and give suggestions on promotion of library activities. Its’ purpose is also to encourage founding and development of all types of libraries and spread the interest of society for books and libraries. Association participates in the creation and execution of library policies, advocates for social and economic status of library employees. Acronym of the association is ZKD (Zagrebačko knjižničarsko društvo, ZKD). Zagreb Library Association is a member of the Croatian Library Association (CLA) and its’ members are active participants of CLA’s professional bodies.
History
In 1975 library professionals from Zagreb City area (Center, Črnomerec, Dubrava, Maksimir, Medveščak, Novi Zagreb, Pešćenica, Susedgrad, Trešnjevka, Trnje, Velika Gorica, Zaprešić) and municipalities surrounding Zagreb area (Donja Stubica, Dugo Selo, Ivanić grad, Jastrebarsko, Klanjec, Krapina, Kutina, Samobor, Sesvete, Vrbovec, Zabok, Zelina, Zlatar Bistrica), considered it necessary to create a professional organization whose mission would be the advancement of library profession, connecting of library professionals and professional advancement and training. Therefore on May 26, 1975 a founding assembly of Association of Zagreb Librarians was held at the premises of City library in Zagreb. Other croatian library associations and Association of Zagreb Librarians integrate into – Croatian Library Association. Statues of the association were adopted at the inaugural meeting on July 22, 1975 and that day marks the beginning of Association of Zagreb Librarians.

Decision to change the name
After the letter from the Ministry of Public Administration, Croatian Library Association and Association of Zagreb Librarians prepared the changes in statute and opened a discussion about its name. Changes were accepted at the extraordinary assemblies (Croatian Library Association January 9, 1998 and Association of Zagreb Librarians January 12, 1998.). With the decision made by the assembly Association of Zagreb Librarians becomes Zagreb Library Association which at the end of the 2016 has 496 members (according to the treasurer’s report on membership fees).
Purpose, goals and activities of the association
Main goals of the Association are gathering library professionals on various activities regarding to development, promotion and preservation of library profession in City of Zagreb and Zagreb County, promotion of interest in books and other library materials and services, and also development of existing and founding of new libraries. In accordance with its goals, Association’s activities are within the area of education, science and research.
Activities:
- advancement of library services which enable free, equal and unlimited access to materials and information
- monitoring, studying, and processing of professional issues and proposing measures to advance library services
- preserving the democratic right of library professionals to freely create, acquire and disseminate information
- professional education and training through professional conferences, seminars lectures and panels
- organization of exhibitions and other promotional activities
- publication of professional journals, and related publications
- public advocacy of library activity and library profession and collaboration with public institutions
- advocacy for better social and economic status of library professionals
- coordination and collaboration with library and other professional associations in the country and abroad.
Members of Zagreb Library Association (ZLA) have a discount on participation fees on professional assemblies organized by the Croatian Library Association. Also members can publish their papers, edit publications of Croatian Reading Association, and work in Association’s professional bodies, which is one of the conditions for professional advancement.
Also members of ZLA have the right to free membership at Zagreb City Libraries.

Učlanjenjem u Zagrebačko knjižničarsko društvo (ZKD) plaća se niža cijena kotizacije za sudjelovanje na stručnim skupovima u organizaciji Hrvatskog knjižničarskog društva (HKD). Svaki član ima mogućnost objavljivati radove i uređivati publikacije HKD te raditi u stručnim tijelima i u samom Društvu što je jedan od uvjeta za napredovanje u više zvanje. Također, članovi ZKD-a imaju pravo na besplatan upis u Knjižnice grada Zagreba.
